The Science of Solving Problems

Mathematics is not about memorizing blindly. It is about understanding the underlying structure of a problem and systematically applying the right strategies. At Noesis Learning Centre, our teaching methodology is rooted in Polya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving Technique.

Understand the Problem

精 (Precise)

Before solving, we must deeply understand what is being asked. We teach students how to dissect complex word problems, identify the unknown variables, map out the given data, and establish the exact conditions required for the solution.

Devise a Plan

快 (Fast)

This is where strategy comes in. Drawing from our extensive database of past-year questions and question-types, we help students quickly recognize patterns and select the most efficient mathematical tool or theorem for the task.

Carry Out the Plan

准 (Accurate)

Execution requires discipline. We drill students on robust algebraic manipulation and computational techniques, ensuring that every line of working is logically sound, minimizing the risk of costly careless errors.

Look Back

精 (Mastery)

The learning doesn’t stop when the answer is found. We train students to rigorously check their results, consider alternative (and perhaps more elegant) methods, and generalize the solution to handle future, similar problems.
